The Body Systems

Body Systems is the second unit of The Nantucket Nutrition Project created in partnership with Nantucket Public Schools through a generous grant from the Community Foundation for Nantucket. Through a variety of active lessons, students learn to identify the key nutrients in food that support healthy body systems. Because a large component of health is exercise (and these lessons are taught during students’ PE time) many of the lessons are activities or games that require whole body movement. This unit also has an accompanying bilingual (Spanish/English) journal for students to track their progress toward caring for each of their body systems.

This unit covers the following nutrition standard from the Massachusetts Comprehensive Health Curriculum Framework:

3.1 Identify the key nutrients in food that support healthy body systems (skeletal, circulatory) and recognize that the amount of food needed changes as the body grows
